Knee Pain Treatment in Pittsburgh
What causes chronic knee pain in active adults?
Chronic knee pain in active adults is rarely just a knee problem. The knee sits between the hip and the ankle, and when either of those joints is not moving correctly, the knee absorbs the extra stress on every step, squat, and stair climb. Identifying what is actually driving the load on the knee is what separates treatment that works from treatment that manages.
That general aching that gets worse when the weather changes. The soreness going up and down stairs that you have started to just accept. The deep squat you have stopped attempting because your knee does not cooperate anymore. The stiffness getting up off the floor that feels like it belongs to someone twenty years older.
Most patients chalk this up to arthritis, age, or just bad knees running in the family. In the majority of cases, it is a mechanical problem. And mechanical problems respond to the right treatment.
At New Edge Spine and Sport in Pittsburgh, we assess the full kinetic chain, not just the joint that hurts.
Why Treating Just the Knee Often Does Not Work
The knee does not have a lot of inherent mobility. It is designed primarily as a hinge. The hip above it and the ankle below it are supposed to handle the rotation, the side to side movement, and the load distribution that keeps the knee tracking correctly under movement.
When the hip is restricted or the ankle is stiff, the knee compensates. It takes on rotational forces it was not designed to manage. Over time that compensation creates the chronic overuse patterns that show up as medial or lateral joint pain, patellar tracking problems, or the general aching and stiffness that patients assume is just wear and tear.
Treating only the knee in that scenario is like treating a blister without addressing the shoe that caused it. You get temporary relief but the pattern continues.
What We Do Differently
Every knee pain assessment at New Edge Spine and Sport includes a full evaluation of hip mobility, ankle mobility, and how the entire lower extremity is loading through movement. That means we are looking at your squat pattern, your gait, and how your body is distributing force from the ground up before we start treatment.
From there, hands-on care addresses the joint mechanics directly, whether that is the tibiofemoral joint, patellar tracking, or the soft tissue restrictions contributing to the problem. Rehab builds the strength and movement quality at the hip and ankle that takes chronic stress off the knee over the long term.

What Patients Tell Us When They First Come In
My knees ache constantly and I just assumed it was arthritis or the weather.
Going up and down stairs hurts and I have started avoiding it when I can.
I cannot squat deep anymore without pain on the inside or outside of my knee.
Getting up off the floor has become something I dread.
I have had knee pain for years and everyone just tells me to rest and ice it.
That last one is worth addressing directly. Rest and ice manage the symptom. They do not fix the hip restriction or the ankle stiffness that is overloading the knee every time you move. If your knee pain keeps coming back despite rest and conservative care, the answer is almost certainly somewhere above or below the joint.
